Nowadays it's "yay, a fellow shipp- wait, but how do I know they're not a nazi?", but even back then it was "yay, a fellow shipp- ugh, they hate Iris" and "yay, a fellow shipp- ugh, they hate Cisco" - and that didn't go anywhere, they're still hated. But also - there's that tendency in that part of fandom to worship Barry, and I... don't. (Inevitable "I-Don't-Hate-Barry" disclaimer here.) I can read and enjoy fics, but deep inside I can't help but feel that their authors probably would look down at me for not thinking that Barry Allen is the most wonderful and beautiful human being imaginable. Like, maybe they wouldn't. But it feels like they would. Like they'd judge me for insufficient worshipfulness and declare me a bad, unworthy eobarry shipper who has no right to count self as a shipper in the first place.
It's not like I feel completely at home in any shipping corner of the fandom (any fandom, not just The Running Show; The Cooking Show had, possibly still has, similar problems too) - there are always some expectations that I can't or don't want to fulfill, so I generally gravitate towards people who don't give a damn about those expectations. I would just like to enjoy my bad-unhealthy-problematic ship in peace, but the nazi mess makes it so much harder, and all the other aforementioned factors don't help either.
