24 April 2017 14:49So I had this doll for twenty or so years, and all those years her name was Hilda - then yesterday I looked at her and realised that I think of her more as Dagmar.
I also stopped to think about Edward as Edward, and I can't even blame sparkling vampires for that. Or I'd rename him immediately after that franchise started to happen. Yet he stayed Edward for years despite the namesake, and then he... just stopped being Edward. And I don't know what his name is now. Awkward.
And I can't just grab a random name out of the thin air, because I don't know about other collectors, but that's not how I name them. I need the name that suits. For whatever reason. I can't properly put it into words - I look at them and feel like they, I don't know, look like the Platonic ideal of [Insert-Name-Here], I guess? (Which means that for me the Platonic ideal of both "Hilda" and "Dagmar" is "green-eyed redhead".) So Hilda's essential Hilda-ness somehow mutated into Dagmar-ness? And Edward's essential Edward-ness just... disappeared?
I'm glad I didn't write about them all that much. Not a lot to rewrite/find-and-replace.
